Here’s what makes the perfect ‘cursed image’

This week was Upvote Everything Day on Imgur (the procrastination black hole I spend way too much time on). So instead of the usual feel good fluff and pandering cute pet pics, the front page was crowded with GIFs of women giving birth to candy abominations and video clips of lederhosen-clad German pop-folk music weirdos. Just like god intended. However, it also usually brings to the fore one of my all time favorite types of content (or at least the one I mildly obsess over), cursed images. I have a horrid fascination with cursed images. What interests me is why… This story continues at The Next Web...

Early impressions: Amplitude’s Humankind looks like a bold step forward for the 4X genre

Amplitude’s upcoming 4X strategy game Humankind officially launched its Open Development closed beta today and we got our hands on the 45-minute preview scenario. I’ll save you some time: If you’re a 4X fan and you’re ready for an alternative to the Civilization formula you’re going to be very happy. Humankind isn’t trying to hide the fact that it’s here to take on the genre and challenge the top dog. But don’t take that to mean it’s a Civ knockoff or clone. Amplitude understands what makes a 4X game great (hint: it’s making an interface that makes 4X fans forget… This story continues at The Next Web...

This app uses AI to make your selfies look fabulously ridiculous

Artificial intelligence has emerged in the past decade as a bedrock technology. We use it for important endeavors such as brain surgery, financial forecasting, and… making AI journalists chuckle over silly selfies. You may have heard of Photo Lab. It’s available on Android and iOS and it’s been installed more than 100 million times. It recently saw a surge in installs after India banned apps from China, including several popular photo editors. [Read: India is reportedly looking to ban 275 more Chinese apps — including PUBG] What it does is simple: it uses AI to apply special filters and effects to… This story continues at The Next Web...

Welcome to TNW Pride 2020. We’ll be covering tech-related Pride stories and putting a much needed spotlight on the LGBTQPIA+ STEM community and its history all throughout the month of June. Pride 2020 will forever be remembered as the year the festivities went virtual. Instead of marching in the streets together, many of us will be attending from the safety of our own homes. Luckily for us, there’s… This story continues at The Next Web...

Here are 4 Nintendo Switch games to help you cope with pandemic life

I can only speak for myself, but it feels like we are at absolute peak information overload. The fact that COVID-19 seems like yesterday’s news (it’s not) is enough to start your day off with a healthy jolt of anxiety and stress. And that’s before you actually read today’s news. One of my favorite coping mechanisms for day-to-day stress is video games but it feels like we’re surrounded in darkness sometimes. That makes it hard for me to enjoy violent or brooding games sometimes… you know, all the popular ones. What I’m looking for these days, is an escape. And,… This story continues at The Next WebOr just read more coverage about: Nintendo...

It’s time for a sequel to The Social Network and Quentin Tarantino should direct it

Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino revealed in a recent interview that he believes The Social Network is the best film of its decade. He’s wrong. Space Boobs in Space is the best film of the 2010s. Space Boobs is a perfect film, it told the whole story. The Social Network, on the other hand, has plenty of room for improvement (2010? Ha, those were the innocent days for social media). That’s why I think it’s time for a sequel. And since Tarantino’s such a biiiig fan, he should direct. Don’t get me wrong, David Fincher is a legend (he brought us Se7en, ’nuff… This story continues at The Next Web...

Civilization VI is available for free on PC until May 28 — here’s how to get it

The most popular 4X strategy game on the planet, Civilization VI, is getting a 100% discount on the Epic Games store now through 28 May. If you’ve been holding out for a sale on the empire-builder that perfected the “just one more turn” genre of video games, you can’t do better than free. I’m going to drop all pretense of unbiased reporting here because Civilization VI is one of my favorite games of all time. I developed a two-year case of gamer claw (when your hand cramps into a computer mouse-shaped claw) when the original entry into Sid Meier’s 4X… This story continues at The Next Web...
